Texas Senate passes hailstorm tort reform bill

A tort-reform bill that would discourage property owners from suing insurers over weather-related claims has passed the Texas Senate. HB 1774 – which seeks to reduce the penalties insurance companies face when they don’t pay enough in claims, decrease the likelihood of paying the plaintiff’s attorneys fees, and protect individual agents from being sued personally — still needs a final vote to reach Gov. Jim Abbott’s desk.
