Information in the litigation finance space is hard to come by. The secretive nature of the industry and the periodic PR challenges it faces combine to make it one of the most opaque areas of finance. Today’s acquisition of Gerchen Keller (GKC) by Burford is therefore interesting on multiple levels – as a source of benchmarking data, as a sign of where the industry may go from here, as a vote of confidence in the future, and as a portent for the struggles the industry may face going forward.

Two of the industry titans in LF are pairing up with Gerchen Keller’s buyout by Burford. The combined company will be the largest in the space by many metrics. Burford is publicly traded in overseas markets, so more details will likely come out over time, but so far we know that the acquisition price is $160 million in a combination of cash, Burford shares and loan notes plus a further potential $15 million in performance-based share consideration.
